Behind the scenes

This music video is also important because of the equipment and technics used in the making of it; probably the first professional music video shot with iPhone 4 according to the way it was used. iPhone was used to capture natural vibration of the instruments and capturing environment in vibrated positions without using post production effects. Sony EX3 and Letus adapter was also used in the making of this music video. Application used in the iPhone 4 is named “almost DSLR”.

Some scenes of the new music video for the song “Iyi ki dogdun (Happy Birthday)” from the rock band “Cicibebe” has been shot with iPhone 4. This is probably the first professional Turkish music video featuring scenes recorded by iPhone 4. (Date: 23.01.2010)

Why did i share this?
– I was the director,..

Testing is one of the most important part of my projects and in this video i tried to show the last step of my tests and share some of my experiences with you.

These days i see so many things that i’ve thought  years ago. In this post, you won’t find me supporting my incredible ideas. Every thinking creature in this universe has things in the mind, many of these may be nonsense, but everyone has an idea. You may have found something incredible, but probably someone else had already found it; it may not be existing yet. You may see many people, from your friends, family, tv,.. saying “I’ve thought about it!! I swear! I could do it!”. YES, BUT YOU DIDN’T.

You have to be aware of the fact: You are not one in a million. ( ok, you are.. according to the point of view ) If you think that you find something (you can be sure that you are not the first one) and if it’s not yet done, do it! Don’t speak and stand still! Nothing is a unique, one-of-it’s-kind idea, but everything is undone.

• Before facebook was even heard, i’ve made a site that is same ( except application system ) with the facebook and for the same purpose; it was a private site, only for classmates. After a while, after my classmates looses their interest in the site, i’ve stopped doing it, later we saw facebook. This was not a unique idea. Probably many people did similar things.
• Before youtube was even heard, i’ve made a site that is similar to the youtube. Those days, it was a secret converting videos automatically for a web site. I had stopped doing it (it was working and usable), after i satistfied my desire for making a site/system kike that.
• I’ve even made a photo sharing site that you can use everything from 1 page without leaving and everything is movable (drag/drop). Those days, these were not that easy. Today you can  put a jquery line to your code and do it in 5 seconds.
• ….

Coming to the near past..

By the end of 2007 i started to work in Nokta Inc. We were sharing our ideas continuously. Here were some of my ideas:

• Let’s create a system that tells you what to watch that day according to the user habits. It has not been not by anyothers that day. It stayed as a line.. It was ignored. After 1 year, i’ve read a news saying that Gittigidiyor Team had started to a new project that tells you what to watch that day (:
• Let’s create a system that will work as a the CORE for a distributed product video and management for all shopping systems accross the country. It stayed as a line.. It was ignored. After 1 year, i’ve read a news saying that Hepsiburada Team had started to a new project that integrates videos to the products. Ok, however it’s not the same, it’s a bit similar. ( Note, this still can be done! It’s not yet done! (if not, not popular and heard) Even across the all countries! (: I can help you extend the idea if you are interested in (: )
• Let’s create a video blogging system. Video blogging was not common those days. Even now it’s not very very common YET. It stayed as a line.. It was ignored..
• Let’s create a live blogging system especially for mobile devices that combines reality with virtual reality and show your way, position in the map while you are blogging. You could even bind advertisements virtuallay(real-time) on the tree for watchers… It’s not just stayed as a line, but also people laughed at it and me. After 1 year, augmented reality projects started to take place. Today you can see many projects like the ones in iPhone: you open camera of your phone and look around, while you are looking, pictures, informations,a videos, sounds related to those places becomes visible on the screen at the related portion of the view! For example if you are looking to the bridge, you see photos popping out from that part of the screen related to bridge, or bridge’s history. When you move the phone, surroundings automatically updates.. And then, i saw that Apple is working on object-recognition system (: Very basicly, when you point your camera to the bridge, it’ll tell you which bridge it is and related informations.. Think about the possibilities.. Other than this virtual reality mix, we started to see live blogging/broadcasting/streaming from many devices. Even professional media staff started to use live blogging/broadcasting now. (qik, justintv,blogtv…)

People are using flash’s fullscreen ability in the wrong way; they are not using the advantage of hardware-acceleration enough.

I have made a flash player (not-hd supported) in 2005 from scratch. It wasn’t using any flash component related to video playback. So it was’t using skins. Starting from those days, nothing really much changed when opening video in fullscreen.

After sometime, adobe gave us a big update which lets us use h264 codec in flash. Internet connections got faster and faster, h264 hardware acceleration was started to be used in graphics cards and in many different kinds of devices.

However  we see many blog posts, articles, tutorials about “how to go into fullscreen” or “true fullscreen mode in flash” or smiliar topics..

Nearly all of them says we have to use the following:

Ok. This is not wrong. Infact, you have to do it. But this is not the right way to do it, i was possibly one of the first ones who asked this to adobe, i got no answer and interestingly nobody said anything about my question. ( it was open to public ) After sometime, i saw that that is what it should be. Now i’ll tell you what i’m talking about:

When you use only the code i just gave, you really go in to fullscreen, but you are using the same resolution of you desktop which really doesn’t use hardware acceleration of the graphics card perfectly. What you have to do, but you don’t is, changing the resolution of the player according to the resolution of the video. So, when applied properly, if your desktop is 1280×1024, but if your video is 640×480, you’ll see that your tracking bar, menu, or anything you show in fullscreen is oversized and looks horrible! At that time, watch the performance of video, it’s flying! Disadvantage of this method is oversized interface elements.. Since you are defining a frame/region and scale it on fullscreen, anything in that screen changes sizes. You have to dynamically calculate the menu interface and draw it accordindly, or if adobe tells us a new way ( or if they already said it, share it with us please ).

You can easily see that many famous web sites are still NOT using this technic. Since hardwares are going better and better everyday, it’s hard for people to see the performance diffference, who have bought their computer recently.

I can hear that you are telling about new window modes and hardware acceleration parameters… I had been really excited about those features too until i saw those are not exactly what we ( infact “i”) want.

Direct and GPU modes. According to me, after applying other methods, you may (shall) additionaly use “Direct” mode. GPU mode is not bad, but if your target audience is not very specific, it’s dangerous. If you use it and the visitor has not a good graphics card, performance may decrease MORE! But if you know your audience and their possible hardware, go ahead and try GPU!

When i said “famous” sites, i really meaned “famous” sites. This includes global video sharing sites and the ones in Turkey. Many developers may say that this method “is deprecated”, “has no meaning”.. “meaningless”.. “shouldn’t be used”.. “makes no sense”.. “it was for flash 9 only”… I’m sorry you are wrong. Come on! Don’t blame the computer hardware directly, it may not be the only problem.. It’s not hard to make tests for these, and i did. Ok I won’t tell anyone go ahead and try it silently, and apply it if you find it usefull. If you find a better way, or new way to add to these, i’ll be glad to see/learn it. I was not developing on flash for nearly 1.5 years ( but i was reading nearly every news about flash and other adobe developments ). As i said, this may be an outdated method when compared to newest things, but it’s for sure that i still see the difference, and i see that my player shows better performance when compared with famouse video players.

Two weeks ago, i was in the set of Cicibebe’s first music clip for the song “GIDI GIDI”.

“Cicibebe” is an extraordinary music group in Turkiye. Their songs generally can not be compared with any other songs. However their songs arei n Turkish, melody would attract anyone from any country.

They are getting their first album ready fully in the following months. We may see their clip soon in well-known tv channels  (:

While i was in the set, i took approximately 800 photos without interrupting the video shoot.
